STAKES are high as APR and Rayon Sport clash in the MTN Peace Cup final this afternoon at Amahoro Stadium.
While Rayon is desperate to end a five-year trophy drought, Erik Paske’s guns have their eyes fully focused on an unprecedented treble after securing the Cecafa Kagame Cup and Primus league.
There is more for the Blues as victory automatically qualifies them for next year’s Caf Confederations Cup.
Paske is however a concerned man as he will be without two of his key players in Albert Ngabo and Kalisa Mao who are still short on fitness after sustaining injuries during last month’s decisive 2011 CHAN qualifier against Tanzania.
The Dutch tactician will now look onto Tchimanga Mutamba and Didier Kapet to tighten the defence.
"We had a poor game against Rayon last week and have to step up our game this Sunday. We have to be a lot tighter at the back,” he said.
Last weekend, Rayon stunned the army side with a deserved 2-0 Primus league win over APR and Rayon interim coach Emmanuel Ruremesha is expected to stick with the same team.
"I don’t expect to make any changes. The boys are prepared for the final and they will give their best,” said Ruremesha.
Ruremesha’s three-month contract winds up today and what a charming way it will be for him to end on a winning note.
Rayon has lifted the Cup a record eight times (1976, 1979, 1982, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1998 and 2005) while APR are chasing for a fifth title after victories in 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively.
Rwf10m awaits the winner while the losing finalist gets to pocket a consolation Rwf7m. Electrogaz, who finished third are already guaranteed to enjoy Rwf4m courtesy of MTN Rwanda.
