NYABIHU – The 2010/11 Nyabihu district budget which was passed recently seeks to provide more water sources to residents in the area.

The budget which was presented before residents, before being passed by councillors, outlines infrastructures, agriculture and cooperatives among the priorities.
Out of a total of Rwf 2.7b, Rwf 736.6 m was allocated to provision of water.

Many residents of Nyabihu district face water shortages with some moving two hours to reach the nearest water source.

"We have earmarked a good package towards provision of water and address sanitation with the help of ‘wash’ project financed by UNICEF,” Frank Kamwaga, the vice Mayor in charge Economics Affairs said.

At least 4.7 percent of the budget will come from the districts’ revenues, 68.2% will come from the central government while development partners will foot 27.1 percent.

Water shortage has been the cause of poor sanitation but the district is determined to have clean water and healthy citizens, Kamwaga said.
