Addressing the gathering during the handover, the head of Rwanda Red Cross, Bernard Nzigiye said that they constructed the houses to ensure that the orphans get shelter.
"The idea of constructing these houses for orphans in this sector was mooted during the One Dollar Campaign and we are delighted as the management of Rwanda Red Cross to officially hand them over,” said Nzigiye, stressing that helping the needy is among their top priorities.
He said that the houses were constructed at a tune of Rwf61 million, adding that each house is worth Rwf6.2mn.
Speaking to The New Times shortly after function, Nzigiye said that they constructed the houses in collaboration with Rwandan Defence Forces during the Army Weeks in August last year.
He also revealed that Rwanda Red Cross intends to construct an average of 60 houses for genocide orphans in the sector, 15 of these already at the foundation stage.
"Getting these houses was a big surprise because we had lost hope of getting our own homes,” said Jacqueline Uwamariya Gatari, one of the beneficiaries.
She said that there over 25 Genocide orphans in the sector who have no shelter, and appealed to the government and other authorities to come to their rescue.
Before inaugurating the houses, the employees of Rwanda Red Cross visited Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre where they paid tribute to victims and contributed Rwf300,000.
