Following the winding up of the last phase of updating the voters register in the country which ended June 30, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) has extended the exercise in Kigali City to July 4 to accord sufficient time to busy city business class to register.

Charles Munyaneza, NEC’s Executive Secretary confirmed the move yesterday in a telephone interview with The New Times.

"We carried out an assessment and found out that the turn up in Kigali City was still low compared to other parts of the country,” Munyaneza said

"People in Kigali are most of the time trapped in business activities and are mostly available on weekends. We therefore decided to give them up to this Sunday (July 4) so that those who did not make it can register or cross check their names on the registry. 

He said that other parts of the country, 90 percent of the exercise had been completed, but in Kigali, it stood at less than 80 percent.

Munyaneza also said that the deadline for the registration for Presidential aspirants still remained July 2.

"Right now we have not received any other candodacies for the seat, but we will be open the whole of Friday for anyone who wants to register to do so,” Munyaneza said.

Currently, four candidates have registered to contest in the Presidential polls slated for August 9.

They include incumbent Paul Kagame (RPF), Dr. Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo (PSD), Prosper Higiro (PL) and the Senator Alvera Mukabaramba (PPC).
