GHANA became the first African team to lift the U-20 Fifa World Cup after they beat soccer powerhouse Brazil in the final and after that historical achievement just under a year ago in Cairo, the same country is on the verge of breaking further ground in world football.

About six of those youngsters were thrown at the deep end at the Nations Cup in Angola and came out as runners-up to Egypt just when everyone had ruled them out. Again, at the start of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the Black Stars were not named among Africa’s favorites but have silenced the critics in some style.

In today’s quarter-finals clash against Uruguay, Ghana, with the entire continent behind them, are out to create further history of their own as they are bidding to become the first African country to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.

On the other hand, Uruguay, two-time winners of the world title are also looking for their first semi-final appearance in 40 years.

The South Americans have won three of their four matches and in Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan, they possess two of the most useful forwards in the tournament.

However, with Ghana, Africa’s remaining hopes in the first World Cup staged on the continent, there will be an arousing support for them across the continent as they seek to go a step further than Cameroon (1990) and  Senegal (2002).
