Ten Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) arrived in the country, last week, to take part in community development activities across the country.

The volunteers, through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will work for two years in various areas such as, agriculture, technology, youth programs and education. 

"The volunteers will have a one-week orientation session and an intensive one-month training in the Kinyarwanda, and start work at the beginning of August 2010,” said Kohei Takimoto, JICA’s communication officer.

Takimoto said Rwanda requested for the volunteers through official development assistance of Japanese Government to embark on community development.

"After the government’s request, JICA did the selection in Japan to get the best experts in fields related to community development,” he added.

In close coordination with the Government of Rwanda and local authorities, (JICA) has been placing a total of 108 Japanese volunteers in many parts of Rwanda since 1987.
JICA expects to receive more volunteers within the course of this year.
