GICUMBI - Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) 408 Brigade, the National Police and residents on Saturday began to construct 50 more houses for poor residents in the Unity and Reconciliation village in Byumba Sector, as part of the ongoing army outreach activities.

Unity and Reconciliation village in Nyarutarama cell, which was recently visited by RDF Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Lt. General Charles Kayonga, already has 50 houses which were constructed during the first phase of the army activities last year.

During the launch of the construction programme, Lt. General Kayonga told area residents that RDF activities are part of the liberation struggle to emancipate Rwandans from poverty, ignorance and diseases.

"After liberating Rwandans from many years of dictatorial regimes, RDF is now committed to free Rwandans from poverty, diseases and ignorance”, Kayonga told residents.
The uniformed personnel and residents participated in clearing ground for the construction of more houses and widened the road leading to Unity and Reconciliation Village on Saturday.

Speaking to The New Times, the chairman of Unity and reconciliation village Gad Sebagabo hailed the soldiers for securing housing for many poor area residents.

"The beneficiaries to the first 50 Unity and Reconciliation houses, constructed through the first phase of the Army week are genocide survivors, Rwandans repatriated from exile and the needy,” said Sebagabo.
