Although they have not won any silverware for the past six seasons, Rayon Sports showed their prowess over eleven-time league champion APR beating them 2-0 in the final match of the 2009/10 Primus League season played yesterday at Amahoro stadium.

Pappy Gasana and Théoneste Muhayimana scored the crucial goals for Emmanuel Ruremesha’s side at a fully packed national stadium in Remera.

The win took the Blues to 38 points, still but remained on fourth position, behind champions APR, Atraco, who dropped out of league last month and Etincelles, according to the table standings.

This win gives Rayon much confidence as they have exposed the military side ahead of the final of the MTN Peace Cup between then two archrivals rivals on July 4 at the same venue.

If Rayon wins the Cup final, they will represent Rwanda at next year’s African Confederation competition and if APR retains the title, the would-be second placed team on the standing will earn a chance to represent Rwanda in the continental competition.

However, despite the loss, only the second in 20 league matches this season for APR, they were still crowned Primus National League champions, their eleventh in 16 seasons after topping the league table with 54 points.

Having won this year’s Primus league, APR will have another shot at the Caf Champions League next season despite a dismal show this year where they fell to TP Mazembe in the second preliminary round.

Etincelles maintained grip on third position with 42 points after defeating Electrogaz 3-2 at Umuganda stadium.
SC Kiyovu finished the season with 36 points on fifth position following a 2-1 win over Police.

Fuadi Ndayisenga and Eric Serugaba were on target for Jean Marie Ntagwabira’s side while Abdul Karim Gashugi scored a consolation goal for Police.

Marines, Musanze relegated

Amagaju survived the drop after a 2-1 win over Marines in Nyamagabe. Amagaju finished with 19 points leaving Marines and Musanze in the relegation zone. Musanze play their end of season match against AS Kigali today in Ruhengeri.

According to current standings regardless what decision will be taken on Atraco who dropped out of the league, Musanze and Marines have been relegated and their places will be taken by Muhanga and Kibuye.
