The Ministry of Education in partnership with Rwanda Education Commons (REC), yesterday unveiled the first education website which is expected to have a digital library of 2,500 education resources, tagged and displayed by subject.

The launch that was organized by REC a project being implemented by the Academy for Educational Development’s Global Learning Portal (GLP) brought together officials from the ministry, REC and all Secondary School Directors countrywide.

The education portal can be accessed on www.educationcommons.rw and this is the first version that was developed in partnership with Google and Rwanda Development Gateway Centre. The final version will be released in September this year.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Charles Muligande, hailed the initiative saying that it will help teachers and students to access quality education through the effective use of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

"This is in line with the government’s vision to enhance education using ICT as a tool to address critical gaps in education system,” he said.

He called upon teachers to use the website efficiently and effectively in order to improve on their teaching and learning methods.

The Managing Director of GLP, Robert Schware, said the use of multimedia is vital to improve on the quality of education.

"The teachers will improve on their teaching methods because they will be accessing best lesson plans, teacher guides, and other materials equally relevant for learners,” he noted.

Eustochie Sezibera, the Coordinator of REC said that, her company this week will begin training teachers at all training colleges in the use of multimedia content.
