NYARUGURU - An official of a Water and Sanitation project known by its French acronym, PEPAPS, has advised the grassroots project mobilisers to step up their campaign and collaborate with local authorities to change people’s mind set on sanitation.

Gorette Buhiga, said this while delivering 28 bicycles to mobilisers from Nyaruguru district on Wednesday.

She added that the bicycles will enable the recipients to reach a bigger number of  people especially those  located in inaccessible areas.

"We appreciate the work done by mobilisers despite the difficult conditions…we expect that these bicycles will enhance their work,” said Buhiga.

The beneficiaries welcomed the donation, noting that it would solve their transport challenges.

"I used to move a long distance from one village to another to sensitise residents about sanitation. The bicycle I have received is a boost as I will be able to reach more people.” said Védaste Minani from Kibeho Sector.

Nyaruguru local authorities say the work done by the water and sanitation team has brought positive changes among residents.

"We appreciate the work done but there is still a long way to go. Gradually we expect a mindset change,” one official said.

The effort of PEPAPS in collaboration with Nyaruguru district has enabled 60 percent of residents to access potable water. 

The project operates in Nyaruguru, Gisagara and Huye districts of southern province. Beneficiaries of bicycles were selected from Kibeho, Mata, Munini, Ruheru and Rusenge sectors.
