KICUKIRO -A man who nearly lost his life on New Year’s Day over Frw 1000 had the added misfortune of spending the night in police cells.
The story began when two friends identified as François Rudahunga alias Kibonke, and Bosco Mpagaze, a butcher at Kicukiro market were welcoming 2008 in a neighbourhood bar. Bit little did they know that this would land them in the cells.
Kibonke was paying the bar maid when one Frw1000 note fell out of his pocket and was picked up by Mpagaze.
Kibonke, suspecting his friend was about to take his (Kibonke’s) hard earned cash, jumped on his neck and in the ensuing scuffle, flung Mpagaze on the ground.
Mpagaze hit his head on a stone causing a severe gash on the side of the head and started bleeding profusely.
This was the beginning of his unfortunate journey to blurred destiny.
Fearing that his friend was about to die, Kibonke attempted leaving the scene of crime but was intercepted by other patrons at the drinking joint and a local night patrol team.
"Alcohol almost made these guys kill each other but we quickly came to their rescue,” Kamanzi, the head of the patrol on duty that evening, said.
Mpagaze said that he had picked the money from the floor as a way of helping his friend who had not seen it fall.
Kibonke was reluctant to take his friend to the hospital for treatment and that is how they both ended up at Kicukiro main police post.
Police officials confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were going on.
