KIGALI - The Platform of Civil Society Organisations will deploy 541 observers for the August 9 presidential elections, the group has said. The Spokesperson of the group, Eugene Rwibasira, told The New Times yesterday that the team will, starting from July 2, undergo training on the code of ethics for election observers.
He explained that 500 of them will be deployed on the Election Day, while others will be involved in monitoring pre-election activities including campaigns.
"We will be looking out for such things as security at the polling stations, cases of intimidation or rigging, and if the media is according equal space to all candidates,” he said, adding that all that was aimed at finding out whether the election process was free and fair.
Rwibasira said the team would also be interested in finding out whether candidates respect the electoral code.
The National Electoral Commission (NEC) started receiving candidatures today.
The Platform for Civil Society Organisations is one of the many local and international entities expected to observe the elections. It is the largest local election observer group.
