BAFANA BAFANA’S chances of going through to the next round of the World Cup hang on a thin thread following Mexico’s 2-0 over France in Polokwane last Thursday.

The result coupled with South Africa’s devastating 3-0 loss against Uruguay left Carlos Perreira’s team bottom of the Group (A). Like the hosts, France also have a point but the 1998 champions have a better goal difference (-2) as compared to South Africa’s (-3).

As Bafana continue their build up to Thursday’s encounter with France, the team will hope that Uruguay and Mexico don’t draw because a result of that nature will automatically send both sides through to the next round.

Now, assuming that either Uruguay or Mexico lose, South Africa still have to grind out a compelling victory over France to sneak through to the next round.

The hosts need a 4-0 result to liven their chances and with the French squad disjointed following Anelka’s row, the target is achievable but only if Bafana make the most of their chances infront of goal.

So far, what we have seen is a host of African teams being so wasteful infront of goal. Cameroon paid the price after a 2-1 defeat over Denmark to become the first country to exit the tournament.

Nigeria look set to follow suit.
