NYAMAGABE - At least 187 patients at Nyamagabe Health Center in Nyamagabe district last weekend received free treatment during a two-day outreach programme organized by medical students from National University of Rwanda (NUR) grouped under Christian Medical Students’ Fellowship.

The students were joined by former medical students who are currently practicing medicine. Prof. John Iraka, a lecturer in the university’s Faculty of Medicine, said the humanitarian gesture was not only meant to treat ailments, but also offer patients social, moral and psychological support.

"We expect to train young doctors to assist patients physically as well as psychologically. I think the right treatment should be wholly treating the patients,” Prof. Iraka said.

Medical students   who were involved in that outreach programme said that it was not only beneficial for patients but also to themselves.

"As a medical student, the  outreach programme is very important because it gives me an opportunity to work with experienced doctors and put into practice what I learned at the university,” said a second year student who gave her name only as Angelina.

The outreach programme involved six practicing doctors and 25 medical students.
