Genocide big lesson, Dutch Justice Minister

KIGALI - Minister of Justice in the Netherlands, Dr. Ernest M.H. Hirsch Ballin, has said that the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, teaches a lot to the world. He made the remarks yesterday after paying tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide at Gisozi Memorial Centre where the remains of hundreds of thousands of the Genocide victims are laid to rest.

KIGALI - Minister of Justice in the Netherlands, Dr. Ernest M.H. Hirsch Ballin, has said that the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, teaches a lot to the world.

He made the remarks yesterday after paying tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide at Gisozi Memorial Centre where the remains of hundreds of thousands of the Genocide victims are laid to rest.

"The Genocide in Rwanda confronts us with the dark side of history. This is a big a lesson to all people in the world,” he said, adding that his government will make sure that it never happens again.

Ballin who became vividly emotional after watching the gory images of Genocide victims, stressed that they must not let these kinds of actions happen again.
"Genocide should never happen again and this is a lesson for all the people in the world not to always forget,” he said.

Rwanda’s Minister of Justice, Tharcisse Karugarama ,who accompanied his Dutch counterpart to the memorial centre, said that Ballin’s visit to Rwanda will enhance the existing good relations between the two countries.

Karugarama added that his counterpart has drawn a lot of lessons from the Genocide in Rwanda, and this will help to strengthen justice between two countries.

After visiting Gisozi Memorial centre, the Dutch Justice Minister also visited the memorial site where ten Belgian UN peace keepers were killed by the Interahamwe militia during the Genocide.
