APR football club are mourning the death of goalkeeping coach Jean Claude Ishimwe. Ishimwe passed away on Wednesday evening at Kigali University training hospital (CHK) after losing a long battle against meningitis.

The 36-year-old joined APR three years ago after brief stints as coach of the under 17 national side and Mukula football club.

Ishimwe became ill after APR’s champions league match against TP Mazembe in April.

Last month, he went into a coma and never recovered.
The military side Secretary General Adolphe Kalisa told Times Sport that the club was deeply saddened by the loss of such a promising coach, who was a major influence on APR’s two goalkeepers Jean Luc Ndayishimiye a.k.a Bakame and Jean Claude Ndoli.

"It is so sad that we have lost such a promising coach at a very young age. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” a sobbing Kalisa said.

Ishimwe’s playing career was cut short when he sustained an injury in 2002 while featuring for Rwanda’s Amavubi Stars in the qualifiers of the 2004 Africa Nations Cup.
Prior to that, he had played for Intare, Mukula and APR.
