Members of an association for people with disabilities in the districts Rwamagana, Ruhango, Huye, Nyanza and Kicukiro, have appealed to the government to assist them start up self income-generating projects.

Representatives of AGHR (Association Generale des Handicapés du Rwanda) made the appeal on Thursday in Kicukiro District where they met to prepare for their 28th anniversary which will be held on June 19.

"We have carried out many activities but we need a helping hand from the government,” one of them, Zacharie Nkundiye, said.

During the celebrations, members will be remembering the association’s founder in Rwanda, the late Joseph Fraipont Ndagijimana, who, in 1960, founded Gatagara centre for the disabled.

"Though Fraipont died long ago, his good work still lives on. We need to support it and unite all Rwandans,” explained Nkundiye.

They also appealed to the general public not to isolate them, saying all Rwandans need to work together to transform the country economically.

"We should follow what Fraipont preached. Most of the time, he used to teach to love and help one another in every aspect of life,” said Nkundiye.
