NYAGATARE - Over 600 vulnerable children in Nyagatare district will benefit from Higa Ubeho, a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project aimed at improving the living conditions of vulnerable children in the district. 

Caesar Kubwimana, the project’s official revealed this during the project launch at EPR Church premises in Nyagatare sector, on Thursday. 

According to the official, the project targets mainly orphaned children from across the district. 

Financed by USAID, Kubwimana explained that the project is implemented by a consortium of two other religious-based NGOs; EPR and CARITAS Rwanda. 

"We train guardians on how to grow crops and harvest high yields from their small land holdings. We mainly teach and mobilize them to grow nutritious crops that can support vulnerable children’s health,” he said. 

In health, he added, the project enables children to acquire health insurance, pays schools fees and provides other scholastic materials like books and uniforms to their beneficiaries. 

Over 20 children have completed secondary school through the project’s support, according to Hitimana. 

Alex Maniragaba, an official in charge of social affairs in Rukomo sector, who attended the launch, commended the project officials for their initiatives.

"The project helps vulnerable children in our sector to study at both primary and secondary schools which have greatly facilitated the sector to address the problems of school dropouts,” he said.
