Have your say : Should parents first approve one’s partner before marriage?

Parenting is quite challenging because raising a child from the toddler stage to adulthood is no play. Exodus 20:12(NJB) says, ‘Honour your father and mother so that you may live long in the land that Yahweh your God is giving’.

Parenting is quite challenging because raising a child from the toddler stage to adulthood is no play. Exodus 20:12(NJB) says, ‘Honour your father and mother so that you may live long in the land that Yahweh your God is giving’.

Therefore one has to respect their parent’s decision at all times. Several people said:-

REUBEN OCHAKI (BUSINESS MAN)

Parents should not be the ones to approve the partner their child is to marry or get married to because I think they can’t know what one likes. That’s why people cheat since they are forced to marry wrong mates.

JULIET KAMANZI (STUDENT)

Parents should not at all approve one’s marriage partner because they won’t live with the couple in the same house. Parents won’t solve any of their marriage issues and in any case a marriage is a relationship between two people.

RICHARD NYIRISHEMA

Parents should not ‘approve’ but rather be ‘informed’ or ‘consulted’ and if they disapprove of one’s partner then it’s up to the child to make the final decision.

RACHEL KWIZERA (STUDENT)

Parents should not approve one’s partner before marriage because at times they become unrealistic.

ROXY RUMANZI (JOURNALIST)

It depends on the situation; if the couple is still courting then parents may advise them on marriage matters but not criticizing one’s partner.

KEISHA MURUNGI (ADMINISTATOR)

Parents should first approve one’s partner before marriage. That’s why we have the Introduction ceremony (Gusaba).

ALISON KAY (RADIO PRESENTER)

The parent’s intuition about the person helps although choosing the partner is entirely your own decision. At the end of the day it’s you who is stuck with this person not your parents.
