NYAMASHEKE - Youth in Nyamasheke district have collected Rwf1.8 million towards activities to mark the Youth Week in the district, authorities said.
The money was raised by the youth during genocide commemoration, according to Mayor Jean Baptiste Habyarimana. The Youth Week begins on July 5.
The activities to be carried out include building and renovating over 30 houses for the poor in Ruharambuga sector, and training workshops on HIV/AIDS, family planning, drug abuse and reproductive health.
"The health activities will be conducted in Tyazo sector where many cases of drug abuse among youth has been reported,” said Habyarimana.
Other activities, according to the Mayor, include constructing classrooms, general cleaning in homesteads, cultivating terraces and planting trees to protect the environment.
Alfred Uwitonze, a national youth representative, said youth representatives at different levels in the district will participate in the activities. He added that they hoped to set an example to the rest of the citizens.
