Parents have been called upon to actively fight against the violation of children’s rights in their respective communities.

The call was made by Dr Eugene Mutimura, the Director of Research and Professional Training at Women’s Equity in Access to Care and Treatment (WE-ACTX), during celebrations to mark the International Day of the African Child at Kimisagara Youth Centre on Wednesday.

"The rights of children in Africa and Rwanda in particular, have been violated for so many years, but now it’s time you, parents, stand up and fight those who violate their rights. You should understand that it’s a responsibility to protect and promote children’s rights in the society,” Dr Mutimura said.

He also encouraged children to always seek advice from their parents and authorities on their rights.

Emmanuel Benimana, the Coordinator of the One-stop Youth Centre, who was representing the Ministry of Youth, urged parents to work hard to fend for their children.
He also urged children to strive to excel in school if they are to achieve their aspirations.

The Day is marked in memory of the over 100 children who were killed while fighting for their rights in Soweto, South Africa in 1976.

The ceremony was attended by over 600 children from across Kigali City. Most of them living with HIV/Aids.
