Maj. Gen. Jonathan Shaw, the British Assistant Chief of Defence Staff, yesterday met Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Ceasar Kayizari, with whom he discussed regional stability.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting that took place at the defence headquarters in Kimihurura, Shaw said that he was here to understand more about Rwanda since he is in charge of international security policy at the Ministry of Defence in London.

"I am interested in the situation in Rwanda and in the region, what better place to come. I was given an excellent briefing on the nature of the Rwanda Defence Forces,” said Shaw.

"And I had very good discussions with the General, and others, about the assistance Britain is giving Rwanda”.
According to Shaw, they also discussed the progress of the Eastern African Standby Brigade (EASBRIG) and what has been done to support it, as well as the potential of the East African Community (EAC) in defence.

"It is all to do with British foreign policy and what we can do to help create stability, help continue supporting stability in this region.”

Britain is Rwanda’s key bilateral partner and the British army cooperates with the RDF in several areas, including training.
