HUYE - Plans are in advanced stages to transfer the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Rwanda (NUR) to a new medical school with its headquarters at the King Faisal Hospital in Kigali.

Health Minister, Dr Richard Sezibera, revealed this while addressing Medical students and staff at NUR last Friday.
He explained that the new Rwanda University of Medicine and Health Sciences will bring together other medical and health training institutions in a bid to enhance the quality of teaching in medical sciences.

"The Rwanda University of Medicine and Health Sciences will facilitate better supervision of students by various specialists from hospitals based in Kigali,” said the Minister.

He added that an agreement to the effect has been reached between the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and NUR.

According to the Minister, the Ministry of Health has already reached an agreement with specialists from King Faisal Hospital and other hospitals based in Kigali requiring the specialists to lecture in the new university as a part of their work.

Dr Patrick Cyamanywa, the acting Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at NUR, welcomed the move; saying the new university will be an opportunity to pool resources together so as to enhance the training of medical students.

Medical students also welcomed the setting up of the new university, saying that they will get more learning advantages and it will be easy to address the challenges that they are faced with.

"There is no doubt that this University will improve the quality of medical training; it will also be easy to address arising problems as an independent university,” said Fidele Rubagumya, the students’ representative.

The Faculty of Medicine at NUR is composed of three departments; General medicine, Pharmacy and Clinical Psychology.
