NGOMA - Residents of Kazo Sector, Ngoma District have formed an association through which they will be able to acquire mattresses for members in order to improve their standards of living.

Innocent Hakuziyaremye, the president of Turyameheza association told The New Times last week that each member makes a monthly contribution of Rwf500. The money is pooled to buy mattresses for each of the members.

So far 95 mattress worth over Rwf2million have been given out to members of the association with more set to benefit.

Hakuziyaremye said that forming the association was initially an idea of women in the sector after realizing that many families couldn’t afford to buy the items.

"This was a very good idea. If you look at our performance within one year of existence there is hope of achieving our goal of enabling all our members acquire foam mattresses,” said Hakuziyaremye.

Kazo is a rural sector in the Eastern Province whose residents are mainly subsistence farmers. Some members of the association who talked to The New Times said they have been amazed by the progress made.

"It is not easy to raise Rwf21,000 at a go to buy a mattress but this association has made it possible,” said Mary Nyiramuhire.

Turyameheza association is composed of 210 members. The association plans to continue the spirit of working together in solving other problems that they are faced with.
