Kigali City Mayor, Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, has appealed to motor cycle taxi (Taxi-Moto) operators in the City to act responsibly and take part in the implementation of the country’s development programmes.

Kirabo made the call Wednesday while meeting with hundreds of motorcyclists under their associations, ASSETAMORWA and ATTEMAMORWA. The meeting took place at Camp Kigali, Nyarugenge District.

She appealed to them to partner with security agencies in the fights against crimes and take part in protecting the environment.

The event is in line with the Hygiene, Road and Environmental Safety Week in the city launched Tuesday in conjunction with the National Police.

It was also part of preparations to mark the 10th anniversary of the police.

"Some of you don’t even mind about traffic lights and Zebra crossings, ending up causing accidents,” she noted, warning them against using the pedestrians’ pathways.

Regional Police Commander, Rogers Rutikanga, observed that 80 percent of the motorcycle accidents result into deaths and appealed to them to always wear helmets.

He reminded them of the ‘Grace Period’ for anyone who has illegal fire arms to voluntarily hand them over before it elapses.

The Grace period which started in February this year is slated to end on June 28.

"The deadline is approaching,” he noted, calling upon all those who have or know the whereabouts of the weapons to bring them before the date elapses.
