BUGESERA - The voters’ register update begins today in Bugesera District with officials of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) and the district, projecting to register about 3,000 new voters. 

This was revealed on Wednesday in a meeting that brought together NEC officials and local leaders in the district, in Nyamata sector. 

Louis Rwagaju, the Bugesera Mayor said that there was need for grassroots leaders, to assess why some people have not registered so far for the purposes of coming  up with a solution on time. 

"We have to start ahead of others if we are to have a clean register …we have illegal immigrants from Burundi, people who lost their ID’s and those who don’t possess any ID’s at all,” he said. 

Fatu Harerimana, the Vice Chairperson of NEC advised local leaders to ensure that all people of voting age are registered.  

"Although we have agreed with concerned officials to speed up the issuing of ID’s, local leaders should provide such people with temporary alternative identifications to allow them register as voters,” she said. 

Frank Kayiranga, the Provincial NEC official, appealed to all eligible voters to turn out for the voters’ update exercise which would also be used to weed out non-existent voters.

He asked those who lost their voters’ cards to report to NEC officials, adding that those who have relocated from their previous residences should have their details transferred to new polling stations.
