THE 2009 Kagame Cup winners Atraco has withdrawn from the Primus league and MTN Peace Cup due to financial constraints.

The taxi-men side which earned promotion to the top flight division in 2007 wrote to Rwanda’s football governing body, Ferwafa on Wednesday requesting to withdraw from the two competitions due to private reasons though many believe are related to financial constraints.

The development comes at a time when club players and Coach Sam Timbe have gone unpaid for the last three months.

Efforts to get further clarifications from Atraco were futile by press time but Timbe revealed that the club had recently terminated its players’ contracts.

Atraco’s withdrawal has given rivals Rayon Sport an automatic spot in the lucrative MTN Peace Cup final slated for June 19.

In 2007, Atraco won the 2007 national football league under Sam Ssimbwa. Two years later, the club rewrote history by winning the Cecafa/Kagame Cup on their debut.

Kitagenda was the hero of the night, after scoring the only goal of the match in the 15th minute.

In addition to the trophy, Atraco bagged US$50,000.
