KIGALI - A visiting delegation of French Members of Parliament has revealed that they have been impressed by Rwanda’s recovery, 16 years after the1994 Genocide against the Tutsi that claimed over one million lives.

Speaking Tuesday at Ntarama Genocide Memorial Site in Bugesera District, where remains of over 5,000 people are laid to rest, the Head of Delegation, Marylise Lebranchu, said that she was amazed by the rate at which Rwanda had developed despite the sorrowful events of 1994.

"Rwandans have together worked very hard to rebuild the nation and put the past behind them,” Lebranchu said.

"People all over the world have to know what happened and work along with Rwandans to rebuild the nation.”

Lebranchu also commended the France-Rwanda relationship that has been growing since the restoration of the French diplomatic ties in February this year.

The delegation also visited a Women Promotion Centre at Kanzenze, made up of 43 Genocide widows.

The women showcased their businesses and also narrated their challenges to the French lawmakers. Lebranchu assured the women that the delegation would work hand-in-hand with them to get solar energy and safe water.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jean Damascene Ntawukuliryayo, who had accompanied the delegation, thanked the MPs for their visit and learning more about Rwanda’s experience.

"Our nation is one that portrays hope and patriotism to the rest of the world. The government and private sector all work together to ensure Rwandans get a better life.”

The French MPs are expected to visit the parliament as well as discuss with various ministries before they depart today.
