12th Genocide memorial tournament
Finals
APR 3-1 UNR (male)
APR 3-2 RRA (Female)
AFTER eleven failed attempts, APR’s female volleyball team finally got it right as they romped to this year’s Genocide Memorial tournament which climaxed on Sunday at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.
The team, coached by the experienced Kenyan Paul Bitok, sailed home after edging local rivals Rwanda Revenue Authority 3-2 (25-15, 17-25, 25-23, 15-25, 15-12) in a thrilling final. With teams poised at 2-2, the army side pulled through in the decider (15-12) to lift their second trophy of the season after last month’s Coupe du Rwanda title.
En route the final, APR had ejected Uganda’s KAVC 3-0 (22-16, 25-18, 25-22) in the semis. One of the senior officials of the local volleyball federation (FRVB) Gertrude Kubwimana says that APR’s win is testament of the development of the sport.
"In the past, the tournament has been dominated by teams from Uganda and Kenya so it was good to see one of our own break that dominance,” she said.
In the male fray, APR was still unstoppable as they trounced National University of Rwanda (UNR) 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) in an all-Rwandan final. Uganda’s Sport S took third place.
The winners in both categories pocketed Rwf500, 000.
