The Director General of Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), Dr Rose Mukankomeje, has encouraged experts to carry out more scientific research on biodiversity and climate change.

Addressing a workshop on Biodiversity and Adaptation to Climate change in the Albertine Rift Region yesterday, Mukankomeje urged participants to address issues concerning lack of observational climate data and reduction on human activities which have been responsible for change in climatic conditions through carrying out research. 

"The work of researchers is needed in order to come up with results which will help policymakers to address issues of climate change and biodiversity”

The workshop that was organised by Rwanda Agriculture Research Institute (ISAR) in collaboration with Climate change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) attracted participants from host Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Deputy Director General of ISAR, Dr Vicky Ruganzu said that the main objective of the workshop is to understand the linkage between biodiversity and climate change and their impact on the livelihoods of the population in the Great Lakes Region.

"This workshop will offer an opportunity to scientists to identify the current state, share information on research findings and make recommendations based on challenges identified and their reliance to biodiversity and climate change”.
