As Giancarlo beats Whyte to stay in ARC race

FORMER two-time national rally champion Rudy Cantanhede proved that he is still acquainted with the KCB mountain Gorilla rally route as he claimed the prestigious race which climaxed on Sunday.

Cantanhede, who is now based in Belgium, raced home in 1 hour, 57 minutes and 7 seconds in his Subaru Impreza N8.
Navigated by Sylvia Vindevogel in a Subaru Impreza N10, reigning national champion Giancarlo Davite was six seconds off the pace while African champion James Whyte from Zimbabwe followed closely in third place in a time of 1 hour, 57 minutes and 26 seconds.

Uganda’s Jas Mangat finished fourth while Rwanda’s corner specialist Olivier Costa in a Subaru Impreza N11 rounded off the top five after clocking 2 hours, 3 minutes and 15 seconds.

The other Rwandan in the top ten was Fitidis Christakis who seems to be enjoying a good season behind the wheel. He finished ninth.

On the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) charts, Davite bagged maximum points for the race, which counts as the third round while Whyte and Mangat finished second and third respectively.

Giancarlo, who dropped out of last month’s KCB Pearl of Uganda rally could however not hold on to his KCB East African Rally Challenge title  which was claimed by Whyte who won the Kenya and Uganda legs.

The classic cars category was won by Kenya’s Ian Duncan in a time of 2:03:23 while Johnny Murengenzi driving a VW Golf GTI was the best placed Rwandan after finishing sixth in a time of 2:28:58.

The rally covered a total distance of 303.99km.
