MUHANGA’S fairly tale run in the second division ended in style after the Western Province side clinched the league trophy for the first time after edging La Jeunesse 4-3 on penalties at Nyamirambo’s Regional stadium.
Muhanga failed to qualify for the top flight last season after losing in the playoffs to Etincelles but the players can now afford a huge smile after winning the title and qualifying for next season’s Primus league.
With the score level (1-1) after normal time, the title was decided on spot kicks and Muhanga eventually sneaked through (4-3).
On top of the trophy, Muhanga will pocket Rwf1m in prize money. Former UNR tactician Gervais Manirakiza took charge of the second play-off game as well as the final following Suleiman Nyibizi’s resignation.
