LIVING LIFE : The Value of Humility

It is man’s nature to aspire for others to heap praise, admiration and to inspire masses. So, we think, at least most of us that we must display raw strength, demolish our rivals, conquer our enemies, and show that we are the greatest. Remember that raw strength is not necessarily equal to success or as a source of inspiration.

In fact strength can portray bad and good in equal measure. Think about Hitler, Mussolini, Winston Churchill, Haile Sellasie, and you will see strength but what are their different legacies?

Rebbe Refael of Bershed said that ‘’Some people pursue acclaim and thrive on being honoured. Little do they realize that in order to receive honour, you must actually lower yourself.

One can only pour into a container when it is held lower.’’ It sounds ironic, but true to the fact, honour usually comes to those who exude humility even to the extent of feeling that they really do not deserve that honour.

Humility comes from the word humus, earth; hence humble people are down to earth as well.  It thus goes that humility or humbleness is also a quality of being courteously respectful of others.

It is the opposite of aggressiveness, arrogance, boastfulness, and vanity. Rather than, "Me first,” humility allows us to say, no to yourself and others first.

Humility is the quality that lets us go more than halfway to meet the needs and demands of others. Humble people are honest in evaluating their strengths and their weaknesses
A demeanour of humility is exactly what is needed to live in peace and harmony with all persons. Humility dissipates anger and heals old wounds. Humility allows us to see the dignity and worth of others. Humility distinguishes the wise one from the arrogant one.

Therefore, this Sunday, find the value of humility in your character.
