THIS year’s national women football league cost Rwf 25.9m-Rwf4.3m more than last year’s edition according to the Chief Executive Officer of the National Football Federation Jules Kalisa.

Kalisa attributes the increment to the increase in the number of teams.

"Since the league inception in 2008, we have been receiving Rwf21.6m from Fifa but that sum came short this year because of the increase in the number of teams,” he said.

Fifa’s contribution is meant to cater for teams’ transport, meals and uniforms among other expenses.

Eleven clubs participated this year, three more than last year’s number and Kalisa now concedes that Ferwafa needs a helping hand from local sponsors to make next year’s league a success.

APR lifted the title in 2008 but has since finished second best to AS Kigali, who successfully retained their 2009 title on Wednesday after a 4-2 victory over Remera Rukoma (GSSR) at Nyamirambo’s regional stadium.

AS Kigali, APR, Bugesera, Les Lioness, Ruhango, Aspej, Rambura, Inyemera, Muhoza, GSSR and Rubavu were in contention.

The league will climax on Sunday.
