Recently, Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) undertook a Rwf 200m cassava growing project on 600 hectares of land in Mayange Sector, Bugesera District.

The project should be commended and used as a model for farmers, especially at this time, when the government is encouraging farmers to shift from subsistence to modern farming. The large harvests will not only provide sufficient food for Bugesera residents, but for the entire Eastern Province.

After ensuring and guaranteeing security for the country, RDF has embarked on food production to alleviate poverty. And, Bugesera is an ideal location for such activities considering that it was historically ignored by past regimes.
As revealed by officials, the project spends Rwf40 million per month on labourers’ wages, which inevitably trickles down to the communities. Consequently, this has increased their purchasing power and boosted their community’s economy. 

RDF has started other projects that include livestock farming, setting up coffee washing stations and large scale maize farming.

Extensive agricultural programmes should be emphasized by engaging institutions like the RDF as they have the capacity to provide essential technical and managerial skills that potential farmers need to succeed in agriculture and other related areas.
