KAYONZA – Authorities in Ndego Sector, Kayonza District, have given mobile phones to grassroots leaders to help them fight crime in their villages.
Meeting sector leaders from across the district, Anita Mutesi, the district Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, explained that Ndego, one of the sectors neighbouring Akagera National Park, has security challenges which mobile phones will tackle with ease.
She cited drug traffickers, illicit alcohol smugglers and thieves, who tend to use the cover of the park, as some of the security challenges.
"We want our grassroots leaders to be able to communicate easily and quickly, to curb such crimes. We therefore appreciate the sector’s initiative to avail cell phones to curb such incidences,” she said.
Jean Paul Rutinduka, a member of community policing in the sector, said that the cell phones would help them contact security organs as and when need arises.
"This is an important achievement…there are toll free police hotlines that you can only call when you have a phone,” he noted.
