HUYE – Muhanga district registered the highest number of crimes committed during the month of May in Southern Province, a provincial security report indicates. The district registered a total of 38 crimes in May, the highest on the list of crimes committed included 12 cases of violence and 7 cases of violence against women.

However while talking to The New Times after the meeting, Southern Provincial Governor, Fidele Ndayisaba said that generally, there has been a marked decline in crimes committed in the province.
"We are happy with the security situation though we still have isolated cases of domestic violence in the province,” said the Governor. He added that cases of some religious organisations failing to comply with some government programmes was a source of concern to provincial authorities.
The meeting revealed that during the same month a sizeable amount of military hardware was seized from the local population. The assortment included 25 grenades seized from the various districts, one gun and an anti-personnel mine that was recovered from Nyanza district.
Ndayisaba called upon people who are still in possession of firearms to hand them over to relevant authorities despite the expiry of the May 19 deadline of the amnesty. He warned of stern action against those who will be found with arms.
During the same month, 13 fatal accidents were reported along with 7 suicide cases.
