GICUMBI - District officials on Friday were left in shock when a 35-year old homeless woman, pitched camp at the entrance of Mayor Bonane Nyangezi’s office for two days, vowing not to leave until her problems were addressed by the Mayor. 

In an interview with The New Times, Claudine Uwizeye, from Mulindi Cell, Kaniga Sector, who was with her two children, claimed that she had nowhere to live after her husband, Silvestre Ndahabatware, abandoned them and sold off the family’s land and house.

"I have been here for the last two days. My husband sold our house and land and decided to marry another woman, leaving me and these children homeless, Uwizeye said. "The Sector local authorities have failed to address my problems.”

Uwizeye displayed a letter from the Local Government State Minister, Christine Nyatanyi dated May 26, addressed to Mayor Nyangezi. The letter requested the Mayor to find a lasting solution for her.      

The Mayor’s secretary, Jannvie Mukabaranga said the lady had failed to meet the mayor because he was  in Musanze on official duty.   

She, however, said Sector authorities at Kaniga, whom she contacted by phone had indicated that Uwizeye collaborated with the husband in the sale of the family’s property.  

"Kaniga Sector authorities have confirmed to me that the woman signed on documents, authorizing the sale of their family’s land and house,” said Mukabaranga. 

When contacted, the district vice Mayor for Social affairs, Eugenie Uwamahoro said the district shall find temporary accommodation for the lady until her problems are ironed out.
