KARONGI - A total of 2283 community health workers in Karongi district will get free mobile phones as part of government’s efforts to boost the health sector through the use of science and technology.
The handsets, a promise made by President Paul Kagame, are part of an ongoing countrywide campaign to ensure efficient and timely submission of monthly medical reports to the Ministry of Health.
Some of the handsets were handed over at the launch of the National Police medical week last week.
Speaking shortly after handing over the phones to some of the beneficiaries, Western Province Governor, Celestin Kabahizi, said that he hopes the phones will be used to improve health services delivery.
Kabahizi challenged the beneficiaries to quickly adapt the new technology in order to compete favorably in this fast developing world. Joshua Musabyimana, one of the beneficiaries shared his joy after receiving the phone.
"In addition to easing my work as a community health worker, I will also be able to communicate with my friends,” Musabyimana said.
In a separate interview, the Minister of Health, Dr Richard Sezibera reaffirmed Government’s commitment to transforming the health sector.
