MUHANGA – The association of Genocide survivors in Muhanga district has expressed dissatisfaction with the district’s decision to shift the Kabgayi Genocide commemoration date from July 2 to June 30.

Ibuka president in the area, Eugene Karangwa, has petitioned the Ministry of Sports and Culture and the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG).

"The memorial of Kabgayi victims and liberation of Genocide survivors has been respected in the past years. These changes cause nothing but pain and disrespect to survivors,” the letter reads in part.

The district changed the date arguing that the memorial was closeto the national Liberation Day which falls on July 4, according to a letter dated May 23 signed by the Mayor, Yvonne Mutakwasuku.

However, Karangwa said, "This date can’t be mixed up with our intensions to pay tribute to our families.”

District officials have remained silent on the petition by the survivors; however, reliable sources intimated that the line ministry was considering the matter.
