Kigali Independent University (ULK), was recently awarded with the East African Community (EAC) Golden Female Award after five of the institution’s students performed well in the female public speaking competition for the EAC universities at Kampala, Uganda.

Presenting the award to the university’s staff and students, Jean Baptiste Murema, the Institutions Guild President, who led the delegation to Kampala, said that his team performed well.

"Our students’ participation was outstanding because they were well organised, that is why they won the award,” he said.

He added that, the competition focused on a wide-range of topics regarding politics, economics, society and culture.

Belly Bine Kanyana, a second year administrative sciences student and one of the students who performed well in the competition, said that the competition provided an opportunity for university students from the EAC bloc to enhance their public speaking.

"The award proved that Rwandan Universities in the EAC are among the best Universities in the region,” she said.

"After we were announced as the winners, students from other universities were not surprised because we performed well throughout the competition.”

She called upon other Universities in Rwanda to always take the lead in every international universitys, competition because it will sell the country’s name and education to the outside world.

Sen. Rwigamba Balinda, the founder and president of ULK, hailed the students for their excellent performance and promised to emphasize on the quality of education.

"This award should open doors for us to compete with other universities in the world,” he said.

The competition, that was organised by Makerere Guild Association, in partnership with the Director of the Students Affairs, brought together 12 universities from the five EAC countries.

The competition was graced by the Uganda’s Minister of the EAC Affairs, Eriya Kategaya, who thanked the organisers of the competition and requested every participant to continue in the same framework in their universities as well as in their countries.
