NYARUGURU - Residents of Nyaruguru district are optimistic that the recent connection of the area to the national electricity grid will boost business in the rural district.

With funding from the Common Development Fund (CDF)-and the water and electricity utility company RECO- RWASCO, a 15 kilometer stretch has been so far connected mainly in the central business district.

As  a result, numerous businesses have sprang up, including hair salons, technical workshops offering services like wielding and service centers like hotels and restaurants which now operate until night hours.

Albert Kabera, a hair salon owner who previously used power generator told The New Times that extension of electricity in the area has translated into more profits.

"I was on the verge of closing my business because I was spending a lot of money on fuel, that is history now because electricity is relatively cheap, my business is more profitable now,” said Kabera.

Electricity connection is also bound to boost business especially in Kibeho-a place that attracts thousands of local and international tourists every year because of reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ that occurred between 1981 and 1989.

Christophe Ntirushwa, the district vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs told The New Times, that more parts of the district will soon be connected.
