Aimable Bayingana has been elected as the new president of Rwanda Cycling Union (RCU) for a three-year term.

He replaces Charles Kamanda who has been at the helm since 2003 but opted not to seek another term of office because of private commitments.

The elections were held on Wednesday at Amahoro stadium where 13 other committee members including two vice presidents, a secretary general and treasurer were elected.

The exercise had initially been postponed on two separate occasions but when it finally took place, the new leaders vowed to do everything within their means to end the controversies that have surrounded their federation for years.

After being elected the president, Bayingana pledged to develop the sport locally and on the international level.

He said, "My first step is to open up a fully equipped office and the next (step) would be to increase the number of clubs in the country. This will be included in the next Action Plan.”

He noted that transparency between individual clubs and the federation should be the basis for developing the sport in the country.

"We have a good terrain for developing cycling, especially mountain bike and our goal is to achieve this. This can be achieved by getting rid of the bad past experiences,” he noted.

Kamanda becomes RCU Honorary president along with Emmanuel Mayaka, the president of Cine Elmay club, the country’s oldest cycling club.
