MUHANGA – Demobilised soldiers in the Southern Province have been urged to continue contributing to their pension schemes if they acquire employment else where, so as to save for the future.

The call was made by Rtd Lt. Col. Abdul Kaberuka, the chairman of demobilised soldiers in the province, during a training session on the importance of pension scheme.

The training was organised by the Rwanda Social Security Fund (CSR) at the Muhanga cultural centre, on Tuesday.
Kaberuka said that the training was intended to educate the discharged officers  on the importance of continuing with contributing to the pension scheme.

"Most of the demobilised soldiers have not had any knowledge on the procedures of acquiring pension. This training has made them aware of their rights and enables them to continue contributing and to benefit from their savings,” he said.

The participants were encouraged to join cooperatives engaged in income generating activities to enable them continue contributing to the pension schemes.

Some of the demobilised soldiers said that they lacked knowledge on procedures for receiving their pension, and had given up making contributions after leaving the forces.

James Nsabyimana, a CSR official said that pension is a right for everybody and the organisation of demobilised soldiers and other institutions will be supported to benefit from their contributions.
