Forty-two babies were born on Christmas day in hospitals around Kigali City.

A survey carried out yesterday in the city’s six main hospitals indicated a total of 42 babies were delivered on Christians.

Twenty-eight of the newborns are boys. None of the babies passed away.

37 were delivered at Muhima Hospital, with four caesarian and 23 normal births.

There was only one birth recorded at King Faisal Hospital (KFH) and four at Kanombe Military Hospital.

Officials at Kigali Central University Hospital (CHUK), Nyirinkwaya Polyclinic and Kibagabaga hospital said they didn’t record any births on X-mas day.

The hospitals instead recorded more births on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Kibagabaga had six babies delivered on December 24 and eight on Boxing Day, while Kanombe recorded three births apiece on X-mas Eve and Boxing Day.
At Muhima, six were born on Christmas Eve while one was delivered on Boxing Day. Nyirinkwaya Polyclinic recorded eight births on Christmas Eve and six were delivered on Boxing Day.

At KFH, a nurse who preferred anonymity said it was surprising that they registered only one birth this time round because the hospital normally registers more deliveries in the festive season.

"Expectant parents normally ask for caesarian to begin a year with their babies,” she explained.
