KARONGI - Over the weekend, there was a massive turn up of residents in Karongi and Rutsiro districts for the voters’ register update, ahead of the presidential elections slated for August.

A mini survey by The New Times indicated that most youth especially students attended the exercise.

"It is admirable that I have finally reached voting age and I can’t wait to exercise my right, come August,” Annette Mutesi, a student from Kibuye Technical School (ETO-Kibuye) said.

The exercise was allocated two days, however, according to local authorities, that time frame was not enough to have all the residents verify their identifications.

"Residents have turned up in big numbers and we doubt if the work can end today (Sunday),” Casmir Nkurikiye, the National Electoral Commission official in Karongi district said.

Statistics show that out of the estimated 60,000 people who were expected to undergo the exercise, only 15,000 had been served by press time.
