Kagame to co-chair MDG Advocacy Group

President Paul kagame mid this week accepted a request from the United Nations Secretary General, to co-chair the Millennium Development Goal’s (MDG) Advocacy Group, along with the Spanish Prime Minister Luis Rodriguez Zapetero.

This was announced by Amb. Thomas Stelzer, the UN Assistant secretary for policy coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs, Department of Economic and social Affairs, after meeting the President at Urugwiro village.

35 acquire citizenship

Early this week the Director of Immigration and immigration announced that 35 foreigners have so far acquired the Rwandan nationality, and they are currently considering more applications. In August last year, the initial batch of 20 foreigners sat the first nationality test.

Damascene Rusanganwa, who is in charge of nationality issues at the department, said the process continues, "so far 35 people passed the exams and are now Rwandans. 11 others  did the tests last week and we are now evaluating them and will soon forward them to cabinet” Rusanganwa said.

KCC orders Housing Bank to pay Kinyinya residents

Kigali City Council (KCC) has given the Housing Bank of Rwanda (HBR) up to the end of this month to have completed compensating all people in Murama cell, Kinyinya sector in Gasabo District who incurred loses during the expropriation exercise.

Aimable Gasana Ndakengerwa, the Director General of Kigali City confirmed the development and said that each of the affected families will be paid five percent of the total funds they were supposed to get during the expropriation exercise.

EU to support elections

The head of European Union (EU) Delegation in Rwanda, Ambassador Michel Arrion, said that the EU commission will support the country’s electoral process but will not send observers for the August presidential election.

The EU commission will send a team of 4 experts to provide assistance to the EU delegation and other EU member states’ missions  and to the NEC if they need it  in order to strengthen their capacities to monitor the election.

"We will also provide a few hundreds thousand Euros for the training of domestic observers and of the national media” Arrion was quoted as saying.

Rwanda women honour Kagame

President Paul Kagame received the "Lifetime Leadership Award for Development and Equality” from Rwandan women, in recognition of his efforts in developing the nation and promoting equality amongst Rwandans.

Speaking at the event, the President acknowledged women’s contribution in the rebuilding of the nation and appealed to leaders to continue supporting them, as they work positively to transform their nation.

NUR introduces new ICT teaching tool

Over 100 academics at the National University of Rwanda (NUR) are undergoing training on Modular Object-oriented Learning Environment (Moodle) an open source course management system.

The programme, that is being run by the University center for Instructional Technology  will enable NUR staff to infuse web technology in their modular courses, deliver on -line courses and supplement face-to-face courses.

"Most lecturers use computers as tools but not as pedagogical tools, the training on Moodle will make the process of learning and teaching more dynamic,”  Evode Mukama the rector of the centre was quoted as saying.
