Twenty-five vehicles and twenty motorcycles were impounded by police for breaking traffic rules during Christmas celebrations.

The head of traffic in the Rwanda National Police, Robert Niyonshuti, said that some of the vehicles were released after their owners paid fines.

"The drivers were drunk and couldn’t observe the traffic rules, which we feared could cause accidents,” Niyonshuti said.

He could not ascertain the number of vehicles remaining at the police custody by press time but confirmed that the 20 motorcycles were still there.

He said that the drivers were over speeding contrary to the traffic rules.

Only six minor cases of accident were reported on Christmas day.

Niyonshuti said only one motorist in Kigali City was injured due to excessive drinking.
"During Christmas, people tend to be overtaken by excitement leading to excessive drinking and reckless driving,” he said.

He called on the public to remain cooperative during this festive season and report to traffic police any case of wild driving that can cost peoples’ lives.

He added that they have deployed enough traffic police personnel on most roads to check on reckless drivers.

Last week, three people, including a Rwandan, died on the spot when a Jaguar company bus crashed in Uganda’s southwestern district of Ntungamo. Twenty-one others were injured.
