RUHANGO - Women in Ruhango district have re-affirmed their commitment to participate in government development programs and spearhead socio-economic transformation.

The commitment was made last weekend during the ‘One million women’ march to mark achievements made by women in the country over the past years.

Annonciata Kambayire, the chairperson of the National Women’s Council in the province stressed that women have progressed and played a major role in social, political and economic change. She attributed this transformation to good leadership.

"The success of women in Rwanda is attributed to good leadership. This has encouraged most women to participate in decision making levels, and empowered them to be part of the socio-economic transformation currently unfolding,” she said.

The Mayor of Ruhango, Célestin Twagirumukiza, promised to support women development initiatives and urged women leaders to strive for excellence in the district development programs.

"The success of the district lies in the hands of women because it has been noted that women are vital in community development. Women have exhibited the ability to steer social and economic change and the district will support such initiatives,” Twagirumukiza said. 

Meanwhile, hundreds of women leaders and residents also joined the National Police in Ruhango to celebrate the end of the Gender Based Violence (GBV) week.

The District Police commander, Supt Fred Simugaya commended women for exhibiting high level collaboration in educating and sensitizing the community on ways of preventing domestic violence, throughout the week.
