HUYE - Over 100 academics at the National University of Rwanda (NUR) are undergoing training on Modular Object-Oriented Learning Environment (Moodle) – an open source course management system.

The programme, that is being run by the University’s Centre for Instructional Technology will enable NUR staff to infuse web technology in their modular courses, deliver online courses and supplement face-to-face courses.

"Most lecturers use computers as tools but not as pedagogical tools, the training on Moodle will make the process of learning and teaching more dynamic,” said Evode Mukama, the director of the centre.

Mukama said that Moodle has the potential to encourage a learner-centered approach by supporting students to learn at their own pace, to interact with peers, to perform and work in small task-based groups, to plan and attend to their assignments and quizzes.

Upon completion of the training, that is expected to end next month, participants will be able to upload and manage resources, create online resources and web-links, and to create activities for assessment, collaboration and communication using a range of Moodle tools, Mukama said.

He added that Moodle instructional technology is currently being used at individual level, but plans are underway to institutionalize it.

"The training has been well received, once adopted at institution level; the technology will make it possible for lectures to interact with learners in other areas of the Country. This will help increase access to University education,” Mukama said.

"Teaching will be done on-line, courses, assignments and quizzes can be posted on the web to facilitate the teaching and learning process.”
